Beloved!

Beloved!

I had the honor to both listen and illustrate Marion's narrative. A formerly incarcerated woman and now entrepreneur dedicated to bringing awareness of the inhumane conditions at prison while also providing hope, resources and encouragement to women returning home from prison. Marion creates bags with beautiful empowering designs and has a message of hope written in the bag from her community. Marion shared "the bags are an opportunity for a fresh start."

Strange Water

Strange Water

Strange Water- Was created to bring awareness to the current water crisis in Flint, Michigan. “Equality” is a word that falls off the tongues of many so loosely. A word that carries so much weight and responsibility is seemingly used as a tool for political gain, and self advancement, instead of being used for its actual intent. How as a country can we say we are land of the free- but streams of “Strange Water” flow through the pipes of communities of color?

Jesus

Jesus

“Jesus” - All too often, black and brown people have struggled to find ourselves in what we have been taught in school and even in our religious spaces. If a person of color is to believe and admire Jesus and the life he lived, it’s important to see a reflection of them, and not the Eurocentric Jesus that’s constantly portrayed in media and the iconography displayed in so many of our churches.

Griefs Healing

Griefs Healing

I created this piece in the middle of the pandemic and titled it “Healing”… but as I watch the world’s attempt to go back to things as normal, and not deal with the stingy painful residue of 2020. I realize the title needs to change. This piece is now titled “Griefs Healing.” Healing is a process, regardless to if one needs healing emotionally, physically and or spiritual it all begins with allowing yourself the space/freedom to feel and actually embrace each emotion You deserve that, I deserve that…! True healing comes when we are vulnerable enough to take the steps to grieve and grieve again. I pray as you are willing to do this hard inner work. I also pray that the Spirit heightens your discernment in finding and surrounding you and myself in an authentic community who embraces interdependence and unconditional love. That’s the only way we will begin to be detangled from the horror and now residue of the previous year.

Be encouraged.

At the Table (The Last Supper)

At the Table (The Last Supper)

At the Table (The Last Supper)

In this piece I wanted to pay tribute to all the women who work in plain sight but because of misogyny and patriarchy never get recognized. I also wanted to honor and celebrate the Black man. Ironically, I finished “Jesus” at the same time the Derek Chauvin trial (George Floyd) began. I also wanted to show the betrayer, “Judas” from a different perspective. It was very important for me to highlight the inherent artistry that is displayed in the diversity of femininity. I want to remind people, even in the middle of a pandemic and what may feel like chaos and dysfunction, there is still room at the table.

"Conflicted"

"Conflicted"

Conflicted- This piece was created to make awareness on how we as Black people have tried to express ourselves all while doing a delicate dance with our white counterparts, about how we are treated unjustly with systematic oppression in place to prevent us from evolving. That dance is over. When I placed the words “ I Can’t Breathe” it was to remember Eric Garner in (2014), not at all did I know we were going to have to re- live the “ I Can’t Breathe” trauma in 2020!!! The time has come for a more radical approach, Black and Brown people are tired of simply not being HEARD !

(Inspired by Norman Rockwell: Triple Self-Portrait)

Eyes, Orange, and Justice

Eyes, Orange, and Justice

How can you be an advocator and seek to change the injustices of the world if you do not see my color? If you refuse to see my tangible color, how do you then seek justice for those who are of intersectionality?
